Rene Sanchez

Houston ISD, Cesar E. Chavez High School
Principal
Houston, Texas
Rene Sanchez is from Edinburg, located in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Upon graduating from high school, he attended the University of Notre Dame for his undergraduate degree, the Ohio State University for law school, and the University of Texas for educational administration. Now, he is enrolled in the Cooperative Superintendency Program at the University of Texas at Austin. Rene has served in schools ranging from 500 to 3200, from rural to urban, including charter, private, and public. Similarly to the types of schools, the positions he has held in those schools and districts are also diverse and include: teacher, coach, director, assistant principal, college counselor, admissions, grant coordinator, STEM director, accountability officer, and principal. As an administrator, he’s served for 14 years total and as a campus principal for ten. Currently, he is the principal of Cesar E. Chavez High School in Houston ISD. The contexts of place and story drive his belief that all students can learn. The two contexts together allow students to weave tales, through text, speech, drawing, music, or code, that enable them to draw connections for their own learnings. The school system, from the school board, to the superintendent, to the principals, to the teachers, must tap those connections to engage our students. Rene and his wife Jean have been married for 12 years and they have three children, Cesar, Graciela,  and Alejandro.
